What can you do?

BY THE NUMBERS:

3.5 million American citizens without food, water, or electricity
70% of people have no electricity from the power grid
80% of crops were lost
70% have clean water
70% have telecommunication service
95 billion dollars in damage
6,067 Puerto Ricans in shelters

51 people have died

ONLY 54% of US citizens know what is going on in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands

Day 34: Senate votes on a $36.5 Billion Puerto Rico disaster aid bill.

In Puerto Rico, 60% of their drinking water is contaminated. Only one hospital fully operational; and accordingly, they have "one of the poorest medical systems in the United States". They have $780m worth of crop had been destroyed, about 80% of its crops lost. Communication from there have been cut as 1360 out of 1600 cell phone towers are lost. Houses are torn apart as water floods into their home. Much of the residents' belonging are either swept in the hurricane or are soggy. Residents who fled to shelters are sleeping on the floor.

Puerto Rico is currently relying on imports of supplies via air and sea transportation. With the debris in the way needed to be cleared, resupplying stocks needed will take a while. It's even more slow as a US law limits shipping between US vessels and US flagged vessels. What's more astounding is that about 54% of the citizens in the US are aware of the fact that Puerto Rico civilians are US citizens.

The Jones Act which allowed the faster and cheaper import of food, fuel and supplies, was waived but it has expired making import of necessary supplies cost double.
